IN A DARK BAR ACROSS town, three men sat crowded into a booth.

One of the men growled then pounded his fist on the table. “Look. We need to get the land from her. If she won’t sign it over to us because we asked, maybe a little more force is needed. If you guys can’t get the job done, I’ll find someone else.”

No sense poking the bear. The man next to him steadied his breathing before he spoke. “No one wants to gain control of the dragon’s lair more than me. With it, we have the wellspring of his magic, and can finally rid the world of another filthy animal. But how do you propose we ensure her cooperation?”

“Surely one of you can charm it out of her. She’s a lonely spinster. I’m sure she’d be happy to have a breathing man paying attention to her. Why do I have to come up with the plans? Aren’t you guys able to think for yourselves?” His fist on the table punctuated each word.

The other man nodded toward the door. “We’ll take care of it.” The remaining guys climbed out of the booth, pausing before leaving the bar.

“Be sure you do.” The menace rang clear in the man’s voice.
